The sophisticated yet friendly wine bar and bistro was originally scheduled to open in early 2019, but due to Butler Whites receiving an overflow of Christmas bookings, its business partners decided to have a soft launch in December.

This will provide extra reservations for people celebrating the festive season, simultaneously giving them a sneak peek at this stylish new environment.

Jason Gittins, one of three business partners, says: “During December, J. Johnson will replicate the popular Butler Whites menu. However, in the New Year we’ll usher in our exciting alternative dishes, many of which focus on the concept of wine plates”.

Wine plates are small meals designed to be complemented by high-quality wines from around the world. The owners of J. Johnson are working with multiple prestigious vineyards to bring premium wines to the Fruit Market, which can be enjoyed in casual surroundings that combine contemporary design and soft lighting with a fascinating backstory.

Whilst the downstairs area is relaxed and spacious, the upper floor is a mezzanine that’s home to original brick walls and eye-catching architectural features. The result is a contrast of old and new, with customers invited to choose from two types of ambience that gently merge together thanks to the open-plan arrangement.

Following the official launch in January, the bistro plans to offer mouth-watering small plates alongside an innovative and experimental à la carte menu.

Later in 2019, a south-facing roof terrace will provide the perfect spot for evening meals, snacks and cocktails, complete with canopy and heaters for cooler nights.

With the building dating back 170 years, this is an unmissable opportunity to view the city’s beautiful skyline and the ever-expanding Fruit Market from above.
